Arve R. Pisani was born in Ålesund on 24 December 1947. He now lives in Porsgrunn, Telemark, Norway, where he continues the research journey he began more than five decades ago.
Since 1974, he has devoted himself to studying the fighting in Normandy in 1944—often at a level of detail that brings individual soldiers and small units back into the historical spotlight. Between 1974 and 1981, he interviewed more than three hundred veterans from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Poland, Germany, and Austria. Most of this work unfolded through extensive correspondence. At times, he received ten to fifteen letters a day, each containing personal stories, hand-drawn maps, sketches, photographs, and other valuable materials. These letters formed the core of his early research, offering insights that could never be found in official documents alone. He continues to receive new stories even today—now primarily from the relatives of veterans who wish to see their family history preserved. Over the years, he has also acquired an extensive collection of primary documents from national archives in several countries. These include war diaries, After Action Reports, Combat Interviews, Military Studies, ETHINTs (European Theater Historical Interrogations), unpublished manuscripts, and countless other documents, maps, and photographs. His most recent book, published in January 2024, is "Normandy 1944: The Cauldron of Death".Pisani's primary area of expertise lies in exploring World War II history on a micro level, with a particular emphasis on highlighting the experiences of individual soldiers within their accurate historical context. Many of these soldiers' personal narratives have long been overlooked or forgotten, but through meticulous research and analysis, he has brought their compelling stories back into the historical record.
